The end of the year is right around the corner. Now, teachers begin to look for engaging ELA activities for the summer! While you might be counting down the days, I know (as a teacher) in the back of your mind, you’re hoping beyond hope that your students don’t lose all the great progress you’ve made this year! After all, you have spent the last nine months helping students become better readers, writers, problem solvers, and more! Because you have done all this hard work and we don’t want to start over, I have three FUN ELA review activities for the summer that are so engaging, that students won’t know they are learning. 

Why Review in the Summer?

When summer comes around, we are all ready to jump in the pool, visit the beach, or simply sleep. Our students are in the same boat! While this break is important, we can’t just ignore teaching all summer and our students can’t ignore learning. Why? Simply because we don’t want students to slide downhill after doing all the work to get to where they are. You can use these three activities to keep students thinking this summer. 

ELA Review Activities That are Creative with Color

Because the summer should still be there to relax and unwind, one of the best ELA review activities for the summer is using color by code or number with a bit of review. You can use a Literary Terms Review Color by Number to help keep your students sharp when it comes to those elements you see in every text you read. With this resource, students have twenty questions about various literary elements like theme, point of view, characterization, and more! If they answer the question correctly, they are instructed to color parts of the design in a specific color. The coloring is relaxing which is perfect for break. However, your students have to work to get there. 

While it can be easy for students to tell you the definition, identifying figurative language can be harder for many. Keep the coloring going with a Figurative Language Review Coloring Activity this summer! Again, this is something that students can do at home, before they leave for break, or something you do on Google Classroom as well. 

Go Back to the Beginning!

Throughout the year, we have learned so much! That’s why an important review activity for the summer is Spiral Review. Spiral review is great for going back to the basics and remembering those building blocks we work on to understand throughout the school year. Using Spiral Review Packets for sixth grade and seventh grade is a good way to keep students thinking about what they already know throughout the summer. In addition, these packets can be assigned online or just as a folder you send home with your students at the end of the year. 

Escape with Reviews Activities for the Summer 

Who doesn’t love a good escape room? This summer, you can review activities that bring your students to a whole new world without leaving the house! A rainy day is the perfect day to spend your time in a Digital Escape Room! With this Test Prep Digital Escape Room, you get to travel to Egypt and be a detective. Who stole the jewels from Pharaoh Khafrie’s tomb? It’s up to you to find out! All you need to do is use your knowledge about literacy! Digital Escape Rooms are incredibly engaging because it makes students feel like they are playing a game. However, in reality, they are learning!

The end of the year might be near; however, you don’t want students to lose it all to the television or whatever they do over the summer. Sending some activities with students to do at home, posting it on your virtual bulletin board,  as well as communicating with parents can make a huge difference next year in terms of students’ growth! So, what are you waiting for? Break out the crayons, get that pencil sharp, and start to think outside the box with these three review activities for summer!
