Sometimes, teachers have to write a very important email to a parent. They want to get it just right. AI can provide valuable suggestions for sentence structure, vocabulary, and conciseness. For example, ask ChatGPT to correct and proofread your writing.

Try the prompt in ChatGPT, “Write a friendly email to a parent regarding their child’s amazing progress in English class.”

b. Content Research: AI-driven research tools can save time and effort by quickly curating relevant articles, essays, and resources for lesson planning or personal reading.

c. Professional Learning Networks: AI can assist in connecting ELA teachers with like-minded educators through social platforms and forums, fostering collaboration, idea-sharing, and continuous growth.

d. Time Management:  This is my favorite part of AI. Programs like ChatGPT can help teachers streamline administrative tasks, such as scheduling, reminders, and organizing lesson plans, freeing up more time for instructional planning and student engagement.

1. Writing Support and Feedback:

• Encourage students to use ChatGPT as a tool for writing improvement. They can input their essays, stories, or poetry into ChatGPT to receive instant feedback on grammar, sentence structure, and style. ChatGPT can provide suggestions to help students refine their writing skills.

2. Creative Writing Prompts:

Teachers are always looking for grading tips that will save them time.  Because grading students’ writing is a lengthy and arduous process, teachers (especially ELA teachers) are always searching for the next, best-grading tip or grading hack.  Unfortunately, many teachers have to take home their students’ writing over the weekend, and they have to spend their Saturday or Sunday grading essays and paragraphs.  You don’t have to do this! These three grading tips will save you hours of work, and you can take back your weekends!

3 Grading Tips That Will Save You Time!

1.You don’t have to grade the whole writing piece. Here is your first awesome grading tip.  Don’t grade the whole essay! When students hand us a writing piece, teachers feel the need to grade the WHOLE thing.  ELA teachers know that it can take 10-15 minutes to grade one essay after correcting the mistakes and leaving comments.

Instead, when you are preparing your students to write an essay or writing piece, explain to them you are only going to grade A PIECE of their essay.  In advance, you can tell them you are going to grade the introduction or maybe the body paragraph.  For your higher-level students, you may not want to tell them what you are grading. Rather, tell them you are going to grade a portion of the writing.  If you want your students to write A LOT, but you don’t have the time to spend grading around the clock, this is a great grading tip.

2.  Make yourself a grading goal. There is nothing like receiving 100 essays in one day.  Shortly, the students are asking if you have graded their essays after a few days.  The students just don’t understand how long it takes to grade one essay.  Thinking about grading 100 essays is so overwhelming for a teacher; however, if you make a daily goal, grading 100 essays doesn’t seem so bad.  For example, let’s just say you received 100 essays, and you want to return them in 10 days. This means you have to grade 10 essays a day.  This makes it so much more manageable when you split up your grading.  If you have to return the students’ writing in two weeks, then you will have to do less per day! Make it manageable to help cut down on feeling overwhelmed!

3.  Use an easy essay grading key. This is my favorite grading tip! When teachers grade writing, the longest piece of grading is making the punctuation, grammar, and spelling corrections.  It takes even longer if the student did not proofread their work.  Rather than correcting and fixing every mistake, use a grading key.  Each number represents a correction.  For example, 1 = spelling mistake, 2 = capitalization, and so on. Instead of writing out the correction each time, you can write the mistake key number.  Then attach the key to the writing, so your students have a reference sheet.  Think about how much time this will save you!

Regardless of what grade level you teach, writing is a struggle for some, if not many of our students. Some students struggle with forming an idea. Others struggle with writing a thesis statement. Whether it is creatively writing or elaborating on their thinking, students find writing to be challenging. How can you make writing more engaging?

Many students find themselves not enjoying writing. As teachers, we never want writing to become daunting and arduous. Our students often feel uncomfortable writing, especially if they are writing about personal experiences; then, add the creative, imaginative aspect. This equates to writer’s block and resistance of not wanting to write.

I wanted to share with you some very insightful blog posts and sites that can help you effectively make writing more engaging in your classroom. These blog posts and sites can also help the writing process become a little less painful and bring more engaging ideas and activities to help foster this art.

Know Your Writers

This is probably one of the most important lessons I have learned as an ELA teacher over my 19 years of teaching. First and foremost, knowing your writers is like knowing your readers. You have to be aware of the types of writing your students like to write, or they won’t be interested. Sometimes, our students do not have a choice when it comes what type of writing they have to write, but when there are no time constraints and your students have the opportunity to write creatively, this is where choice and writer identity becomes very important. Learning what type of readers and writers your students are, has the capability of of creating an environments your students are more interested in, as well as learning and exploring.

Paraphrasing & Summarizing

1. Summarizing-Teaching students to summarize a story, novel or chapter is not easy, and they often struggle with this skill. I have used the 25-Words and Done strategy, where the students have to keep their summaries to 25 words or less, but I really LOVE the One Word Summary Activity. from the blog, ELA Brave and True. I can’t wait to try this out!

2. Paraphrasing-Paraphrasing is a skill our students REALLY find difficult. They have a hard time trying to take an idea or author’s words and put it in their own words. Often, they unintentionally end up copying the idea. I have tried the “Trash and Treasure Words” approach; however, Edutopia has a fantastic blog post regarding paraphrasing, and they link a variety of helpful sites that can really help you foster lessons that will help your students correctly paraphrase. I really also love the Academic Phrasebank, and this can be so useful in the classroom to help your students organize their thoughts.

Descriptive & Creative Writing

Are you working on descriptive and creative writing in your classroom? Finding the perfect writing prompts for your students is key, and engaging them in this type of writing involves some searching to find intriguing prompts and ideas.

Here is a wonderful blog post, Descriptive Writing-Strategies for Teaching by Teaching in Room 213. I am also going to include one of my former blog posts, The Art of Creative Writing (Especially for Your Boys). This blog post will link you to some amazing sites with unbelievable writing prompts. Your students will be highly engaged!

Argument & Persuasive Writing

This category of writing is probably the most common one we teach because it is one of the major writing Common Core/New Generation writing standards. Finding interesting articles and activities to peak your students’ interests in writing for argument, can be challenging at times. We want to find a topic that provokes discussion and debate. I found a few resources and websites I think will help you in your classroom when teaching argument writing!

First, check out Common Sense Education. They link to other websites who provide some great activities for your students to help them with their argument writing. Secondly, the New York Times provides some awesome argument writing prompts for students, and the website links to different articles the teacher can use to help introduce the topic.

To begin, teaching creative writing can be a thorn in some teachers’ sides, especially writing and creative topics for boys.  English teachers will tell you there is not an extensive amount of time to incorporate creative writing into the curriculum because there is so much imperative writing teachers need to cover (argument, persuasive, informative and literary writing), but when we have a chance to add it in, we do, and we want it to be engaging, right?  

Second, “fun” is not always associated with writing because, well, many of the prompts out there are rather mundane, boring and cliche.  Let’s be honest. We want are kids to WANT to write, and the only way this is going to happen is if the teacher finds prompts the students are going to WANT to write about in their story. Remember, boys hate expressing their feelings, so the fluffy, cushy feel-good prompts do not work for the boys.   You have to think action, adventure and fun with the boys.

What if you don’t have time for an entire period or two for creative writing?

I actually have incorporated many of these prompts as bell-ringers in my class. I post the prompt up on the Smart Board, and I give my students five minutes to write as much as they can about the prompt, and I often offer extra credit if the students finish the writing prompt. My requirements are 1 1/2 pages written, single spaced.

I wanted to share with you an list of amazingggg creative writing prompts I promise will get your students thinking and writing, and your boys will LOVE them.
