I know right before Thanksgiving, teachers need no-prep Thanksgiving ELA activities. The two days before Thanksgiving break can feel like a beautiful blend of excitement, chaos, and “Are we really expected to teach right now?” energy. Attention spans are shorter, students are buzzing, and teachers are trying to hold the room together with coffee and positive vibes.

The good news? You can keep things meaningful, structured, and fun, without spending hours prepping.

Here are my favorite no-prep, grab-and-go ELA activities that keep middle schoolers engaged all the way up until break.

1. 10-Minute Reading Spark Passages

Short, seasonal passages are perfect for the pre-break days. Choose topics that are interesting but not too heavy, such as:

• Why Some Cranberries Bounce
• How Animals Prepare for Winter
• The Mystery of Hibernation

After reading, give students one quick task. Have them highlight the main example of figurative language, or circle one example of figurative language. You can also ask them to write one inference from the passage or create their own “deep-thinking” question.

If you really want to add some flair to their reading, have them color!

2. Vocabulary Mini-Challenges

Zero prep, big engagement. Try:

• Create a Thanksgiving-themed synonym for each vocabulary word
• Use three current vocabulary words in a silly Thanksgiving story
• Make a “Figurative Language Feast” where each table writes one example of personification, one simile, and one metaphor

This works incredibly well as a bell ringer, especially when energy is high.

3. Gratitude Blackout Poetry

Give students:

• A page from an old book OR a printed article
• A black marker

Have them create a blackout poem with a gratitude or hope theme.
Students LOVE this, and it instantly calms the room.

Display them on a “Wall of Thanks” for easy classroom décor before break.

4. Discussion Cards: Thanksgiving Edition

Write 12–15 discussion prompts on the board or display them digitally. Examples:

• “Should turkeys be pardoned? Why or why not?” (argument)
• “What’s one tradition you think should stay—and one that should go?” (opinion)
• “What is one thing you’ve learned this month that you’re grateful for?” (reflection)

Students discuss in pairs or groups. You circulate and listen = easy win.

5. The “One Good Thing” Reflection

End class with calm.

Ask students to write:

• One good thing that happened this month
• One thing they’re proud of
• One thing they’re grateful for
• One goal for when they return from break

Turn it into a ticket out the door for an even smoother transition. Have them write their “One Good Thing” Reflection on a Turkey Template!

ELA Activities for the End of the Year

1.The Last Line Writing Challenge

Give students the final line of a story, and let them build the rest. Whether it’s mysterious (“And then, everything went dark”) or sentimental (“She finally understood what home meant”), this activity lets students flex their creative writing muscles while sneaking in plot structure and figurative language. Bonus: display their stories in a “Gallery of Goodbyes” wall.

2. Book Tastings: Summer Edition

Transform your room into a café, beach shack, or even a Camp Read-a-Lot. Set up stations with popular middle grade or YA books and let students “taste” the first few pages. Have them rate the books and create a summer reading wishlist. This is a great way to build buy-in for summer reading without assigning a novel. The best part? Your students now have the book they need to read over the summer (A two-for-one deal)!

3. ELA Mystery Games

Students love to solve riddles, decode clues, and read between the lines to crack a classroom mystery. Whether it’s “Who Stole the Plant Truck?” or “Who Stole the Basketball Uniforms?”, these games reinforce key reading skills like inference, theme, and main idea, reading comprehension, grammar, literary terms, and feel like play.

4. Literary Lip Sync Battle

Assign students a favorite character or author and let them lip sync or dramatically perform a monologue, poem, or key scene. This is perfect for theater-loving students and helps with tone, expression, and public speaking confidence. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen someone channel Shakespeare while wearing sunglasses.

5. The Great End of the Year One-Pager Project

First, give students a blank sheet and challenge them to summarize their favorite book, poem, or short story from the year using doodles, quotes, symbols, and key takeaways. Winter is the perfect time to make learning feel like a cozy, snow-filled adventure! Snow days and chilly mornings can spark creativity and excitement in your classroom when paired with the right lessons. Whether students are imagining their perfect snow day, crafting snowman-shaped poetry, or analyzing text threads from Frosty himself, the season offers endless inspiration for engaging ELA activities.

This lesson blends science and storytelling, drawing students in with the wonder of how snowflakes form and why their intricate six-sided shapes are so unique. I love seeing their curiosity come to life as they learn that no two snowflakes are truly identical, and the fun facts about snowflakes makes the article that more interesting.

Halloween is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to break out all the Halloween ELA classroom ideas and spooky lessons. No matter how old my students get, they always like taking time to read some spooky stuff that makes them just a little bit scared! If you need some fun Halloween ideas for ELA, you have come to the right place! 

Flow Like Poe

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the spookiest guys around. When it’s scaring season, changing up the classroom décor and using some fun Edgar Allan Poe posters can be a great way to get your students into the spirit of Halloween. Not only are these great décor, you can use them for journal writing as well. Sometimes if I need a quick journal prompt, I will have students choose a quote on the wall and tell me what they think the mood is, how they relate to it, or something  of that nature. 

While you’re getting your Edgar Allan Poe things all hung up, you can check out this awesome The Raven poem analysis activity. This poem is a classic which means there are so many ways to read it. I like to have my students do a close reading. With this, I often have them listen to a recording as well as read it a few different times. 

Create Fun Halloween Comprehension Activities

Another fun way to get your students into Halloween is with a spooky story. By using this Halloween Comprehension Activity, your students will be able to up their nonfiction text skills while gaining some fun trivia about one of the best holidays. This activity includes the history of Halloween, a multiple choice comprehension check, and a fun color by number activity. 

Use Escape Rooms to Spook It Up

One thing my students love are digital escape rooms! These rooms are great for getting students to focus on a goal (getting out of the room) while using some incredibly important skills. My Halloween Escape Room focuses on figurative language is a great skill to work on during Halloween. It seems during this time of year, trees can reach out and grab, claw, and scratch at people so much easier. Plus, the phrase blind as a bat has an instant image in your head!

Well, yes, if you know how about plot, reading comprehension, punctuation, and more! This is a fantastic review tool you can use with students when they are all kinds of crazy due to Halloween. 

Practice Your Halloween Vocabulary 

Just because it’s Halloween, doesn’t mean you can’t work on your vocabulary skills! These Halloween Vocabulary Word Activities are great for working on your context clue skills. With this activity, you get a fun context clue activity plus the code with an answer key. 

Don’t Forget to Write!

When it comes to Halloween, one of the best things you can do is write a scary story! Students love to try to scare you and they can come up with some of the craziest ideas. I like to use writing prompts to get students started with writing. Then, once they are more comfortable, I like to challenge them with the Spooky Story Generator. This story generator gives them pieces of the story and then they have to figure out how to make it work!

In February, classrooms across the nation celebrate Black History Month.  This month is an important time for reflection of our nation’s history. Secondly, it gives people the opportunity to see through a different lens, and understand empathy and tolerance for those who face adversity. In addition, Black History Month in the classroom lends itself to empathy and compassion lessons, as well as teaching the importance of tolerance and equality for all people. Here are five impactful Black History ideas for middle school and engaging activities for middle school students for Black History Month.

Perfect Ideas for Black History Month

1. Create a gallery walk using images from the Civil Rights Movement. Firstly, hang some of the images around your classroom. Next, have your students rotate through each picture.  Give your students a minute or two to analyze the picture. Then, have them reflect on what is happening in the picture.  In addition, provide your students with a worksheet where they can write down their thoughts and reflect on the images.  Here are some excellent websites for Black History images:

2. Take part in a virtual museum exhibition. Have your students go on a virtual field trip and view exhibitions of the Civil Rights Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.  Create questions based on the virtual museum that your students will answer as they explore.  Your students can also work on this collaboratively with one of their classmates. This makes an excellent group work assignment.

3. Educate your students about racism, segregation, and stereotyping.  Understanding specific vocabulary and its impact is the first step to ending racism through education.  First, take a class period to review words like, “racism”, “tolerance”, “discrimination”, “prejudice”, and “stereotyping”. Next, follow up with an activity that has your students looking deeper into these words. Ask them, “How these words have the ability to impact someone’s life and feelings?“.

4. Discover poetry by black and brown poets. Firstly, make a copy of different poems by black and brown poets for your students. Next, separate your students into pairs. Have them analyze the poem together. They can annotate in the margin of the poem.  Lastly, have your student recite the poem in front of their peers. Also, have them explain their analysis and the meaning behind the poem. Here are some beautiful poems by famous black and brown poets:

Explore novels about Black History and novels told through the eyes of black and brown narrators.  Literature gives readers a window into the lives and events of all different types of people and characters.   Exploring novels that have black history or a black/brown narrator lets readers comprehend the time period. It also has them analyze the struggles of these characters and settings.  In addition, readers have the ability to make connections and empathize with the characters. This ignites a growth of understanding and compassion for others of a different race.  Here are a list of novels that explores black history or are told through a black/brown narrator:

Halloween and Thanksgiving are perfect times of the year to incorporate exciting and creative activities within your ELA classroom. There are three things I know my middle school English students love to do-color, write creative stories and learn about the “real” history of different events. At times, it is hard to find activities like these for middle school, especially since coloring is more of an elementary level activity.

I wanted to help you with your lesson search, and provide you with unique, entertaining activities for Halloween and Thanksgiving. These activities incorporate coloring, creative, and other fun activities your students wish they did more of in the classroom. In addition, these activities will have your students:

-Practicing their reading comprehension skills

-Practicing their multiple-choice abilities and test-taking skills

Halloween Reading Comprehension Color-by-Number:

Learn about the history of Halloween with this article. Students will answer multiple choice questions that will correlate with a color grid. They will color in the grid according to their answers, and it will reveal a spooky character!

“The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe–

Introduce your students to the haunting poem, “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe, and have your students learn, analyze, critically think and discuss this poem with guided vocabulary and comprehension questions. Next, have your students dive into Poe’s poetry writing, analyzing his style and formatting by creating their own poetry!

Dracula-The True Story-

This activity gives the students the opportunity to write Dracula’s perspective of his life using the music of Taylor Swift’s song, “Bad Blood”. We all know the stereotypes of a vampire, but what if that is not really the story? Your students have the opportunity to explore this question, creating a song parody with Dracula’s real story.

Thanksgiving Reading Comprehension Activity & Turkey Craftivity

In addition, they will also ponder over what is important to them in their lives, what they are grateful for, what they wish for in the future, what they hope for, and how they feel about their life/family/world. Secondly, your students will transfer all their information to the turkey template.

In the end, the students will all an adorable colored turkey that shows evidence of the article, as well as their thinking!
