This Poetry Assessment requires students to apply their knowledge and provide a written response.

The Poetry Assessment includes:

*PART I- Identification of 15 Poetic Terms and Devices, using definitions and examples to identify the term.

PART II-Application-Three short poems where the student is asked to read the poem and identify poetic terms within the poem.

PART III-A short response; The student has a choice between two poems. They have to identify the metaphor that is being used and explain how it is relevant to the poem using lines from the text.

This Winter Poetry- Word Choice & Imagery Activity will get your students excited about writing poetry and using imagery in their writing! Any teacher who has taught a poetry unit has always run into these problems with many of their students: 1. They don’t like writing poetry, and 2. the students do not know what to write about. Many of them hit a brick wall when it comes to finding a subject to write about, especially when they have to be expressive and draw off their emotions; hence, this is how I came up with the lesson, “Playing with Words”. I actually created this lesson a while back, and it was one of the ways how I secured my job in teaching. This was my demo lesson!

The Winter Poetry-Word Choice & Imagery Activity is designed to take the writer’s block out of writing poetry, teach students how to use vivid words to create imagery in their poetry, and literally, have “fun” with words by moving and manipulating them.

In addition, it gets students into the season of winter, as they have to brainstorm vivid vocabulary that describes winter. This activity is perfect for reviewing key figurative language techniques when returning from winter break and in the snowman craft can create a great classroom display.

Holiday Acrostic Poem & Writing Activity

This Holiday Acrostic Poem & Writing Activity resource is an engaging activity for your students to reflect on hope, kindness, love, and other important values and themes in poetry and writing prompts. Acrostic poetry is a creative type of poetry where your students are instructed to use the letters of a word to start their poetic sentences. In this case, your students will be writing an Acrostic poem using the word, “hope”, “kind”, and/or “love”. If the Acrostic poem is too difficult or too time-consuming for your students, I also included a short writing prompt, “If you could have one wish for this holiday season, it would be…”. I wanted to add some variety to this activity, in case you needed to differentiate instruction.

To add to the engagement of this activity, the students will complete their final poem/writing prompt on an ornament/dreidel, cut and color the ornament/dreidel, and you can create a beautiful wreath using your students’ poems and/or writings. This is a perfect invitation when people enter your classroom-a gorgeous wreath made from your students’ work!

This Thanksgiving Acrostic Poem & Writing Activity is perfect for your students to reflect on giving, kindness, family, compassion, and other important values and themes; moreover, this is an engaging activity for your students to reflect on these values in poetry.
